Course

Cultural Heritage – a cross-disciplinary perspective: National Identity, Education & Pedagogy and Tourism & Economy is a Summer School initiative at UCL University College’s Campus in Jelling centered on a one week Summer School in the town of Jelling in August 2020 combined with e-learning activities before and after the stay in Jelling.

The Summer School on Cultural Heritage will take a comprehensive approach on cultural heritage that encompasses both a tourism, museum and educational perspective on the subject.

Target Group

The Summer School is a BA-level course of 5 ECTS and is arrange by UCL in Cooperation with The University of South Eastern Norway (USN).

The Summer School is open for all interested participants with formal educational qualifications but is especially suited for students or professionals in the fields of teacher/teacher education, pre-school education/pedagogy, tourism or cultural heritage who are interested in a cross-disciplinary approach to Cultural Heritage, which uses the town of Jelling, and its institutions in Jelling as a hands-on real world case study.

Purpose

The Summer School on Cultural Heritage will take a comprehensive approach on cultural heritage that encompasses both a tourism, museum and educational perspective on the subject.

The comprehensive approach is meant to mirror the situation in the cultural heritage and educational sector where museums increasingly is expected to facilitate tourism and not just disseminate history and where demands for sustainability and local partnerships increases the need for cultural heritage institutions to function in close connection with the local society.

As for the educational sector, the approaches in the sector can be used to strengthen cultural heritage institutions outreach to children, family and schools. However, at least in Denmark, both the school and pre-school institutions are expected to use “culture” and cultural heritage as means to strengthen children’s competencies and personal development. Thus, also students in teaching will benefit from knowledge of cultural heritage and the cultural heritage sector.

Teaching Methods

Prior to the summer school week students will work individually or in groups with literature studies and with the initial assignment. They will be able to consult with instructors during this period.

During the one week in August, work will consist of lectures, group work, seminars, visits to, and talks with, professionals working with the course subjects and a one-day field trip.

Afterwards the participants will work individually or in groups with their final assignment.

Possible specializations

Specialization is possible through the initial assignment and the final (graded) assignment. Both will be on a subject that the course participants chose themselves to reflect both their educational background and their special interests within the overall course theme.

Conditions

To pass the course, participants a required to participate actively in all parts of the course. The means to study the basic course material, do the initial assignment, participate in the one course week in August and hand in the final assignment for evaluation.

Learning Outcomes

The module is equivalent to 5 ECTS. 

The course will give participants tools, knowledge and skills that will enable them to approach the interplay between national identity, cultural heritage, tourism and education/pedagogy in a comprehensive and reflective way. It will furthermore enable them to use these competencies in their future studies or professional work.

Knowledge

Upon completion the participant will have gained

  • Knowledge about relevant theories in the fields of national identity, tourism and cultural heritage education/pedagogy
  • Knowledge about relevant practical examples (cases) of interplay between two or more of the main course subjects
  • Knowledge about theories or other approaches that give a theoretical framework for understanding the interplay between national identity, tourism and cultural heritage education

Competencies/skills

Upon completion the participant will able to

  • Discuss and use relevant theories about national identity, tourism and cultural heritage education
  • Identify and explain examples of the interplay between national identity, tourism and cultural heritage education/pedagogy
  • Analyse how the interplay between national identity, tourism and cultural heritage education/pedagogy can be used professionally
  • Use their knowledge and understanding in their further studies or professional work
