Nursing and Patient Education in a Technological and Cultural Perspective

Course

For nursing students with focus on health pedagogical initiatives, culture and values in health promoting, disease preventing, rehabilitating and relieving nursing interventions.

Exchange Programme

Target Group

Nursing students only.

English level B is a requirement.

It is possible to attend the course physically at the UCL campuses in Vejle, Svendborg, Odense or online. We reserve the right to allocate students to the different campuses. It is possible to combine this course with a clinical placement.

Purpose

The purpose is to achieve knowledge of the impact of individual, social and cultural conditions on the experiences and reactions to health challenges and links between diseases of patients/citizens as well as skills in and competences to take responsibility for situation-specific communication and pedagogical interventions.

Students work problem-based and innovatively. There is focus on health pedagogical initiatives, culture and values in health promoting, disease preventing, rehabilitating and relieving nursing interventions.

Learning objectives:

The student:

  • can assume responsibility for use of relevant technology, including information and communication technology in the relevant context
  • can manage and assume responsibility for quality assurance and quality development
  • can show responsibility and be professionally updated based on an understanding and identification of own learning processes and development needs.

Teaching Methods

All teaching and counselling is in oral and written English.

You will work problem-based and innovatively and experience different teaching methods such as lectures, presentations, dialogue, exchange of experiences, group work, casework, independent studies and a project work at the end of the nursing course.

Conditions

In order to complete the module and obtain a certificate, the student has to:

  • Attend in person at UCL campus Vejle, Svendborg, Odense or online.
  • Complete a mandatory study activity (casework in a group).

Learning Outcome

Learning objectives:

The student:

Content components:

  • Culture concepts and their importance in nursing
  • Patientology perspectives on culture
  • Curology perspectives on transcultural nursing
  • Nordic nursing theories, concepts and methods in nursing
  • Values in the professional relation
  • Communication, teaching, counselling and/or advising directly and/or in a digital context
  • The importance of technology in nursing
  • Participation and involvement, the concept of health, competence to act and actions, knowledge, setting and context

Central concepts in patient education such as:

  • Health behaviour, empowerment, self-efficacy and selfcare/self-management

Didactics and learning with focus on:

  • Selected communication and conversation tools and technologies
  • Situation-specific communication
  • Education
  • Counselling and guidance

 

No examination.

A mandatory study activity will be held related to communication and/or teaching counselling.
