In mid-April, UCL hosted the NOKSA 2024 – Nordic Conference on Social Education. The conference aims to discuss the role of social science in creating informed human beings, who can navigate in a world characterized by uncertainty.

Keynote speaker I: Thorsten Bøgh Thomsen
Romantic Aesthetics and Climate Change
Lector and leader of The Hans Christian Andersen Center at University of Southern Denmark, Thorsten Bøgh Thomsen, initiated a discussion based on the novel “A Journey on Foot” (Fodreise) by Hans Christian Andersen. In the novel, the author criticizes the arrogance of man when meeting the inanimate. Based herein, Thorsten discussed how romantic aesthetics and climate change affect each other and what the role of the didactics of social sciences might be.

Keynote speaker II: May Jehle
Current Challenges in “Politische Bildung” in Germany in Light of the Historic Development
May Jehle, Vertretung der Professur für Didaktik der politischen Bildung an der Technischen Universität Dresden, commenced a debate on how civic education always is connected to the current and future society and its political system. May also discussed how the concept “Bildung” can be used in a broader context in social sciences.
